Greeting ma bonnie lads and what an excellent month of walking footie February has been. Highlights include: - Highest number ever attending a weekly session (28) - 10 new players to our ever expanding numbers - An incredible 47 active players on our data base - Paddy and Bert, two of our most senior players, still ever present this year proving you're never too old for walking football. - Outstanding day/night of ribbaldry at the Diggers Fine Drinking Establishment
A warm welcome to all the new lads who joined us this month including Gerry, Brian, Frank, Billie, James, Alan, Thomson, Brendan, Bill and Harry - great to have you all on board and hope you all enjoy City Strolling. A wee word of encouragement to our longer term injured lads, (although several of you have nothing wrong with your drinking arms!) Alan, Dougie, David, Brian and Ian get fit soon and hope to see you all displaying your silky skills at the WoF San Siro. Great to see Tam back on Thursday following the removal of that Alien's heid that grew out of his leg a month or two back. With the increase in numbers we have now had two games each week raging on across the smaller pitches and the good news is, if numbers increase above 30, we have the option of hiring a third pitch so feel free to invite your chums, friends and lovers.
Friendly games, competitive leagues, cups et al. In the hazy smoke-filled rooms of the Diggers, with strong drink taken, discussion was overheard of taking our "atttractive" brand of geriatric soccer out into the real world and play against other teams. There are many options out there including the "National" Ravenscraig league, potential Edinburgh League with perhaps over 50 and over 65 age categories. Alternatively gentile friendlies could be arranged, perhaps with overnight stays and late night revelry with like-minded groups. If there is an interest in this kind of thing we require a strong leader/co-ordinator to take command.....Any volunteers?
Edinburgh City FC On Thursday 22nd February I met with two Edinburgh City board members to discuss our current partnership. Initially I gave them an update on how much ECWF had grown over the last year and also discussed Walking Football Scotland's Strategic Development Plan and the potential advantages of a senior club's involvement with walking football. EC were very positive about maintaining links with ECWF and agreed the long term benefits of walking football and the link to the Scottish FA's Football's For Life campaign. Whilst not offering any concrete promises EC are considering the following: - Space to store our balls & bibs with their sponsor whose offices are next to World of Football. - Donating a set of old strips or negotiating deal with their strip supplier Football National. - Offer of staging a walking football demo at half time during EC game on either 7th or 21st April - Advertising ECWF through programme adverts and promotional material -I n the longer term EC are looking at securing funding from the SPFL Trust and other sources to create a role of Community Development Coach/Officer who would co-ordinate youth coaching sessions, deliver Fit Fans in Training course, co-ordinate ECWF session and deliver other community based activities. Welcome your collective thoughts on this as following on from the approach from Hibs this may be our best option allowing our own autonomy but with with maybe a wee bit of support. Who cares really I hear you shout, as long as we get a kick o' the baw of a Thursday morn.
StartingTime..... Following on from some confusion (or tardiness) about our start times I offer the following explanation. Our official booking time is from 11.30 to 12.30 however as we used to play for an hour and a half at Meadowbank we are trying to sneak on a wee bit earlier (shocking I hear the former law enforcing officers cry) If I can ask you all to be ready stripped for action at 11.00am hopefully we can access the pitches a little early, have a gentle warm up to avoid all these nippy wee aches and strains, listen to me spout the usual nonsense, pick the teams and hopefully get the footie underwear shortly after 11.15. Medjia For the newer lads a reminder that we attempt to communicate on such Fancy Dan platforms like Facebook and What's App and you are most welcome to join us particularly if are interested in the contents of Bert's trouser and enjoy observing Rays spectacular IT skills.

Great start to the new year boyos with average numbers up to over 18 per week and another influx of exciting new "strollers" as we offer a warm welcome to Sandy & Shuggy. (good name for a band) and the happy return of Brian and Ron. Since being turfed out of Meadowbank we've now played eight games at our new venue with the following ever present; Aly, Bert, Paddy and the ubiquitous Micky Lacano. Aware we have a few long term injuries and I am sure we all wish Alan T, Dougie C, David K, Jimmy B and Tam M a speedy return to the fold. Stade World of Football With the bigger hall almost bursting at the seams and 9 a side probably the maximum numbers, we are still geared up to welcome many more new players. World of Football have agreed, if numbers get up above twenty, we can then move to two smaller pitches which would be perfect for a couple of five/six a side games. So if you fancy this, get on the case to your old fitbaw mates and get them along.....the futures bright - the futures walking footie. The Diggers Following on from our Christmas night out, the back room of the Diggers has been booked for us on Thursday 15th February straight after our game at Chesser. For those delicate wee souls who haven't a clue what the "Diggers" is, this is one of Edinburgh finest old style drinking establishments, officially called The Athletic Arms and located at the corner of Angle Park Terrace in the Slateford area. Derek's laddie, (who is Mine Host and recent BT Pub of the Month winner) has generously agreed to offer us sandwiches and will remove the crusts and perhaps run them through the blender for those without their own teeth. Twelve bold lads are already confirmed so get your booking in. Team Edinburgh City I am very aware that many of us are more than happy thrashing about on a Thursday, however there is an ongoing discussion amongst other local walking football groups about setting up an Edinburgh/Lothian league probably playing at a central venue once a month possibly Corn Exchange during winter and outdoor at Tynecastle in the summer. The over 50 age group may be a trifle fiesty for some of us gentle folks however there is a thought about creating an over 65 age group that would be considerably less competitive. Welcome your collective thoughts on this. Whats App Delighted to report that twenty five of you have join up in the City WF What'sApp link. Very simple to get onboard by simply downloading the App onto your mobile phone and then text me your mobile phone number. The Luddites amongst you can off course, continue sending their pigeons. Player of the Month The only goalkeeping, striker cum hooker I have ever known - the one and only Billy Brown. A Sporting (fenonamonXX, phenominumXX) Great by Paw Broon (Billy) 1950: Born. (Under a Bad sign) 1955: Accident severely damage to left foot, lost top of 2 toes. 1956-6: Primary School (Pennywell) Sporting career starts Skipping, Hide & Seek, Bools, and excelling in Kissy Chasey. I also started Street Football, 30-a-side at least, where the big boys stuck me in goal and said if the ball comes anywhere near you blooter it away. 1962-4: Secondary School (Craigroyston) Kept up with Kissy Chaseing and took up Choreying Yaps (Stealing Apples) needed to be a fast runner and Jumper (Fleeing from farmers and their dogs) this put me in good stead for my next foray into sports. Edinburgh Scholastics where I excelled in the 50m sprint, High Jump and Long Jump. I Joined the Glenogle swimming team gaining 2 medals but as the only training time was 6am in the morning and I loved my bed this sporting path was short-lived. 1965: Rekindled my football career and got into the School team as a goalkeeper and ended up winning the Edinburgh Schools Trophy that year. Was also selected for the Edinburgh Schools team but as a right back?. 1966-86: Started work at Ferranti Ltd. Joined the rugby club and starred as a hooker chosen because of my great height. Also starred in the departmental football team, also at this time played for the Dorchester Dossers and Learmonth Thistle, where once again the big boys put me in goal. 1987-9: Formed a 11-a-side U/7 Sth Queensferry football team and started to play friendly games against Hutchie, Tynie, Salvie and Edina.(there was no leagues until boys where 10 years old). 1988: After talks with Hutchie and Edina we started to play 7-a-side football with smaller goals, we thought this was the way to go to aid the boys playing but the SFA condemned us and refused to have anything to do with this smaller game. 1993: Formed a new team and amalgamated with Kirkliston BC to form KSQ and by this time the U/7 game was starting to take off with over 500 boys playing every week. 1997: The number of boys now playing 7-a-side football on a Sunday has risen to approx. 900, so had a meeting with Tam Smith (Hutchie Vale) and B Devlin (Leith accies) and decided to form a proper committee to run the football, so we came up with the East of Scotland Soccer Development Association (ESSDA) and formed guidelines to run the matches, most notably rolling off and on subs, and if any team went 3 goals up the opposition could put on another player this was to try and prevent the old 20-0 score lines. 2001: the KSQ team that I was coaching went through the whole season winning every game. Won the league and I was presented with a cup from the boys in recognition of this achievement. 2014: Retired from coaching to take a well-earned rest 2017: At the grand age of 67 started to try and get a bit fitter and wanted to take back up the Kissy Chasey but was not allowed (unable to catch them now anyway) so started to play the walking football. And to this day while playing I think dementia creeps In and when I go for the ball I forget to allow for lack of toes and miss the ball, (Well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it).
Many thanks for this Billy who is the fifth player to bare their soccer soul to the world so who is up next. Surely we have a real player out there with proper tales to tell like keeping Denis Law out the school team or nutmegging Jim Baxter. I had the very traumatic experience of playing against a 13 year old Graeme Souness at Silverknowes Park sometime in 1966 when I was fifteen and have still to get within ten yards of him. Who's up next? Walking Football Scotland Following its succesful launch at the end of last year Walking Football Scotland is looking forward to a productive year developing the game across the land. At its next board meeting this Friday 2nd February some of the rivetting initatives being discussed include firming up on all governance issues required of a charitable organisation, developing business, marketing & communication strategies, identifying funding opportunities and expanding the resource material available on their website www.walkingfootballscotland.org . Keep yourself up to date and post your own thoughts on the WFS Facebook and Twitter pages.

An Extremely Splendid and Healthy 2018 to you All. Our move out to the World of Football at Chesser seems to have been fairly painless and has even attracted a few new faces to our ever growing group. A warm welcome to Alan, a regular with the Hearts and Oriam groups, and Gary a newcomer to the walking game and great to see Jimmy and Deric back in the fold as they move closer to their spiritual home. Average numbers after the last four weeks in our new venue has been nineteen which is one more than our Meadowbank average was over last year. Pretty good considering there is plenty alternative entertainment currently available and just proves what a sublime group of dedicated athletes you all are
Huge shout out has to go to Paddy McGovern who complete his 50th game of the year on Thursday. Only two weeks missed in 2017. Outstanding commitment from the former Notts County youth. Mention in dispatches to our magnificent octaganarian Bertie who only missed around 5 weeks or so when he was building and opening bowling greens across Edinburgh - Join City Walking Football and play for ever! Days Oot Following our successful Christmas day/night at the Caley Picture House does anyone fancy organising another Jolly Boy away day in the new year. Possible options could include a wee session after our Thursday game at Derek's laddies howf - The Diggers or perhaps a little further afield a trip through to Weedgieland for a Hampden extravaganza before they shut it down. There is a great deal for old gits that includes a tour of the National Stadium plus entry to the Football Museum for a mere fiver a head. More info at: http://www.scottishfootballmuseum.org.uk/ With our bus passes to hand, transport would be simple and free and we could always have a few bevies/food before heading back along the M8. All other suggestions most welcome. WhatsApp Doc Following a splendid idea from Ally to improve communications, we have now set up a WhatsApp group. What's What's App? I hear the luddites amongst us cry. Well it is very similar to texting only you just send a message once and everyone in the group get's to see it. (Not too good for slagging off one of your teams performance though). Currently in the group are: Alan Taylor, Alan Thomson, Ally S, Billy B, Chris E, Derek M, Deric O, Gary B, Jimmy B Martin M, Neil S, Robert H, Russell B. If you want to be on it there are two things you need to do. Firstly ensure you have the WhatsApp app downloaded on your phone. If not it's very easy to do and free. Then text me your mobile phone number and heh presto....instant abuse from all. Failing that pidgeon post and telegrams are still available. Player of the Month In our latest "player profile" we feature our very first foreign import all they way from Engerland - Russell Lee. Russ hails from Gateshead which is the town on the other side of the river from Newcastle. His real education began when his dad took him to see a pre season friendly between Newcastle United and Newcastle United Reserves when he was 7. The Reserves won; but the bug had bitten and he has been a Newc… Excellent tale young Russ and up next month from marginally closer to home, somewhere in Outer Pilton, the mighty Billy Broon or, as he once sang to me well after midnight in the Edinburgh University student's union bar circa '71: "Call me Willie, call me Willie, Blind dog Fulton, Smoke House Brown, Call me Willie, the one and only Willie Brown" (With apologies to the wonderful Ryland P. Cooder)
We are back on the freshly relaid big pitch this Thursday the 4th, so let's get your New Year fitness regimes off with a bang and as previously discussed, if numbers ease over 20ish, we can switch to two smaller pitches and get a couple of games raging side by side.
"Get there at eleven, nice and keen, Don't be late in two thousand, eighteen"

Welcome to final edition of the City Stroller before we bid a sad farewell to Meadowbank, our home for the last two years. Our final session certainly went out with a bang as a record twenty one chaps and one gal braved the wintery chill of Hall 3 in several keenly contested seven a side games. The honour of scoring the final goal at the old stadium went to one of the bairns of the group Neil Sinclair who slotted home at the near post with the last kick of the day. From next Thursday 7th December our new home is: World of Football Corn Exchange, 11 Newmarket Road, off Chesser Avenue. EH14 1RJ There is amply car parking at the venue and for those armed with bus passes the Skyline 300 takes you right to the door and the 4, 34 & 44 go along Slateford Road. Get off before Asda at Slateford Rail Station, cross the road and then a five minutes saunter down Chesser Avenue into Newmarket Road. The changing rooms are in the main building were there are 8 smaller pitches however we have booked the large pitch which is in a separate hall behind these from 11.30am to 12.30pm but request you all arrive by 11.00am to allow time to select teams, warm up and maybe get an early start! Finances💷 Please find attached a detailed report on our Income & Expenditure over the last eleven months which shows a very healthy surplus of £428 has accrued over this time. Initially we can use this to subsidise any shortfall we may experience in the move to Chesser but hopefully over the next few months we can break even and re-introduce the free teas & coffees. Walking Football Scotland Delighted to report that the governing body created to promote and develop walking football will be officially launched on 6th December at the Smith Art Gallery in Stirling. Edinburgh City WF will be well represented at the launch as our very own Bert Cunningham has been invited as one of the "senior" players in the game to meet the oldest football in the world. Rumour has it Bert used to play "three and in" with Mary Queen of Scots back in the day when the ball was brand new. For more information please check out their website www.walkingfootballscotland.org and follow them on Facebook. Half a Century @ Meadowbank Following a fairly recent tustle with the grim reaper, every day is a splendid wee bonus on this good earth for your humble narrator however it was with a fair amount of sadness I strolled out of Meadowbank Sports Centre yesterday, a venue where I have spent a fair amount of time during the last almost half century. This icon of Edinburgh sporting life, which has produced many magnificent athletes including Alan Wells, Yvonne Murray, Chris Hoy and Les Ferry is about to be demolished which heralds very much the end of an era. On several occasions in the past I recall Meadowbank being called a "White Elephant", how inaccurate was that, as over 15,000 folks every week have passed through the doors all these years.
My first regular involvement with Meadowbank began a few months after it opened in 1970 when I played every week in the mid-day business five-a-side leagues with an extremely good Scottish & Newcastle Breweries team that rarely lost a game over the course of almost seven years. I have to add that the team included guys who played with East Fife, Stirling Albion, Hearts and Dundee United with me making up the numbers! Throughout the 80's and 90's I continued to attempt basketball, football, handball, squash, and badminton there however in 1989 the poacher turned gamekeeper when I joined the Meadowbank management team, a role I thoroughly enjoyed for almost 13 years. This was a great experience although initially challenging as I adapted from over 20 years working in the private sector to becoming a public servant. One of the major challenges was moving from a local authority organisation to an arms length company called Edinburgh Leisure. During the Compulsary Competitive Tendering process there was a rumour flying about the Cooncil that I was a spy from the private sector trying to prise away Edinburgh's lucrative sports & leisure facilities. Part of my responsibilities was a strong involvement in managing events which included Rock Concerts (featuring the likes of Prince, (a strange but magnificent wee purple fellow) Simple Minds, Mark Knopfler and Boney M!), 1997 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit and numerous national and international sporting events. This also offered the opportunity of meeting a wide range of interesting people from the sporting, celebrity and political world including that wee wifie who lives down the road in Buckie Palace.
After leaving Edinburgh Leisure in 2001 my advancing years saw a decrease in physical activity at Meadowbank however I regularly coached and managed basketball there from youth development level through to international squads up to around 2008. In December 2015, just as I thought my visits to the old stadium were long over, I saw an advert for walking football and for the last two years I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting former colleagues and playing with an ever growing bunch of great lads every week. I am delighted that the walking football will continue as we move to our new venue at World of Football and hope we are all still around to return to the new Meadowbank when it rises from the ashes in a few years time. I thank you Meadowbank. Know your History Some of the more recent additions to our eclectic group may be interested on how we got started but we fully understand if you wish to doze off now. Walking football has been played in Scotland since late 2012 beginning on the outskirts of Edinburgh at Loanhead, Danderhall and Hibs training centre at East Mains, Tranent. Our own group held it's first session on 7th January 2016 when six players answered an advert by Edinburgh Leisure to start walking football at Meadowbank. Included in the six were Martin, Bert and an other numpie who are all still attempting to master the game two years later. For the first year Edinburgh Leisure continued to run the sessions with numbers averaging around ten per week, often supplemented by Edinburgh Leisure's staff and Martin's sons!
Towards the end of 2016, Edinburgh Leisure informed the group they were no longer in a position to support walking football but offered us the opportunity of running our own sessions. Following several chats, negotiations and a little nashing of teeth we became an independent group and on 5th January 2017 Edinburgh City Walking Football was launched. Due to the increase in interest in the game and a little self promotion around town we are delighted to report that numbers have greatly increased. Forty six individuals have taken part in our sessons over the past 11 months with 30 regulars and an average weekly attendance now of over 18. We are very much part of the massive growing interest in walking football with over 80 groups and almost 2000 people playing the game across Scotland.
As we move towards a new era may I take this opportunity of of personally wishing you and your family a very pleasant and peaceful festive period and thank you all for your support this year.

Once again your cub reporter has been AWOL for half the month dodging Hurricane Othelia on the High Seas so most of the tales of daring do at the City Geriatricball may well be works of fiction. Sessions Brilliant attendances at the last few weeks with 20 and 21 at our last two sessions, and a very warm welcome to new lads Chris, Colin and John - Great to have you on board. Lost track of everybody's attendance records however one thing is certain - Paddy McGovern has only missed one session since 5th January, brilliant commitment Paddy but could everybody give him a big hug next week as he is the only one without an email address. New Venue Following our high level board meeting last Thursday we confirm that we will move out to the World of Football at Chesser Avenue starting on 7th December. Due to the high numbers recently, we will book the larger indoor pitch which can cope with up to 9/10 a side but we have the option to switch to either one or two smaller 6/7 a side pitches if numbers decrease or increase - simples. The large pitch is already booked from 12.30 to 1.30 so we will initially book it from 11.30am to 12.30pm. I suggest we arrive around 11.00am which allows time to have a blether, warm up and get the teams picked and if available we can always sneak on early. The cost of the pitches are £39 an hour for the large pitch and £32 for the smaller. At a later stage, once our numbers have averaged out, we may be in a position to negotiate a similiar catering deal as Meadowbank but for the first month or two you will sadly have to purchase your own libations although biscuits may well be provided by a major sponsor. World of Football appear to be fairly flexible so we will be in a position to amend times/venue etc at a later stage if these do not suit.
For any of you fancying a sneak preview of this venue you are most welcome to join Russell, Bob, Norrie, Ian, Dougie and myself at any of the Hearts WF sessions held there every Tuesday from 12.00 to 13.00. Buses include 3, 4, 25, 34, and 44. From Slateford Road get off at Slateford Rail Station - 5 minutes stroll From Gorgie Road get off at Chesser Avenue and 10 minute yomp. Festive Day Oot As per item two at the "board" meeting it was agreed to hold this magnificent cultural event after our last Meadowbank session on Thursday 30th November. The final programme is still to be finalised and the Son of Derek has also kindly offered sarnies and sticky buns in the snug bar of the Diggers if required. So the provisional programme is: 12.30: Walking Football @ Meadowbank 14.00: Showering & Pampering 14.20: Tea & Coffee in cafe 15.00: Tearful farewell to Meadowbank Sporting Emporium and OAP bus pass to Weatherspoons, Lothian Road 15.30: Spot of scrannery accompanied by a selection of strong ales, fine sherry and vin rouges 17.30: Fast 44 bus to the Diggers for said delicacies 21.00: Back to the Care Home or onto oblivion.................
Over fifteen good men and true have already confirmed their attendance so lets get you all along. Please confirm your attendance and if you will be bringing your carer. Hibernian Community Foundation As discussed in previous correspondance 'tings are well under way to create a partnership with the above group to spread the walking football gospel to the uneducated. We will gradually change our name over to Hibs Community Walking Football in early December with HCF promoting the game through it's network early in the new year. We will off course remain an equal opportunities, politically correct organisation open to supporters of all other small provincial clubs, including the likes of Newcastle United, Hearts and Queen of the South etc.
Warm Weather Walking Football🌞 Following our exciting trip to Aberdeen you may be interested to know that we have been invited to an even more exotic venue next year - Majorca. Not sure if our bus passes will be valid for this trip but the tournament will take place from Thursday 10th of May up to and including Monday the 14th of May 2018 in the popular and friendly resort of Santa Ponsa - full details available if interested (which could also include WAGS) And last but not least..... Following Bob Glen's excellent tale of sporting heroics last month our Gorbal's graduate David Kaye refused to be intimated and tells us his heartbreaking story of football futility:"On my 6th birthday my Uncle Sammy bought me a football, making me possibly the only boy in the Gorbals in possession of such a trophy. This allowed me entry to the elite training facilities doon the close, through the dunny and across the hallowed portals into the back yard. My Mum watched proudly out the tenement window, but was shortly obliged to intervene by pointing out that a necessary pre-condition of the use of my football was that I be allowed to kick it occasionally. At age 8 my family moved up-market to commune with the alkies and junkies of Scotland's first high rise flats - Moss Heights. In a sign of the times only me and my pal Wee Willie Scott didn't attend Sunday School. Instead we played one-a-side, 45 minutes each way, on the full size Catholic School fitba pitch. This lasted several weeks until the local constabulary were summoned and we were granted a criminal record for trespass and a clip round the ear. At age 12 I moved to my alma mater, Bellahouston Comprehensive for the Sons of Gentle Folk. In fourth year we had OE (Outdoor Education). There were 84 boys in my year. We had access to the facilities at Norwood - two rugby pitches and one football pitch. Thirty neds and hard-men were assigned to play rugby on one of the rugby pitches, where they happily kicked the sh*t out of each other for a couple of hours a week. The twenty-two best footballers, as selected by the nicotine stained moustache of the Heid Gym Teacher, were allowed to play on the football pitch. The next best twenty two had to play football on a rugby pitch. Those of you with an O-level in arithmetic will note that there were ten punters left over. We had to play in a small stretch of grass between two of the pitches, and had to endure the wrath of the others if we dared to disrupt one of the real games. In the days before political correctness, The Moustache dubbed us "The Spastics". Some were indeed physically impaired, some very over weight, and two geeks brought their stamp collections and swapped doublers in one of the goals. It was my dearest wish to win promotion to football on a rugby pitch but the assignments seemed to be for life. However, to my great joy, the flu epidemic of 1962 decimated our numbers making promotion a near certainty. I stayed up late polishing my football boots to an impressive shine on the eve of the great day. At first we were allocated to our usual stations until The Moustache assessed the situation. I noted him heading our way on a talent scouting expedition and seized my chance. I demonstrated my Ian Ure style will-to-win by pushing over "Fat Bob" Sutherland, grabbing the ball, and setting off on a mazy run round one of the stamp collectors before slotting the ball neatly past the other one. I raced back to the hypothetical centre circle, right arm aloft, Denis Law style. The Moustache shook his head and departed muttering "fucking spastics" not quite under his breath. The rugby-pitch footballers played 5-a-side and we were left to our own devices. That was pretty much it until, as a big boy of 69, I spotted an advert for a new game called Walking Football. The rest is history."
These are outstandingly inspirational yarns that surely encourage the Doubting Thomas's out there that this is the game for them as they hurl into their dottage. More stories either fact or fiction required. Who's up next?

Welcome to the Monthly Ramblings of Edinburgh City Walking Football Well, following a balmy outdoor game last week, that's probably the summer disappearing over the horizon as we plunge into October and time to look out your woolie bunnets, gloves and tights as we brace ourselves for the winter onslaught. Big thanks to Florida-bound Russell for running the show and dealing with all the money laundering business over the last few months. Delighted to report that we are still well in surplus with over 350 squid tucked away in a sweaty sock under my mattress which could come in handy when we move to a new venue that may not offer us Meadowbank's generous terms. New Venue Great turnout at the new World of Football centre at Silverknowes last Monday as sixteen good men and true tried out the pitches as a possible new home for the City ballers. A few lads thought the surface was a bit fiery with the ball difficult to control however we have that problem every week, wherever we play Good facility and definitely in the running to become the new walking football Centre of the Universe. Many thanks to my young cousin for getting us vouchers to hire a pitch on the cheapo, cheapo which meant all the auld pensioners got a freeby and can afford an extra wee dram this weekend. The only concern is the lack of catering facilities for our much vaunted apres match post-mortem, but hopefully this can be resolved although perhaps a trip to World of Football's sister site at Chesser should be explored. Also in attendance was Hibernian's Community Football Development Officer and so bemused was he by the display of "extreme" soccer that he insisted on taking our photo for inclusion in UEFA's Grassroots programme. Inspirational Tales One of the great joys of this excellent sport is the many fine folks and inspirational stories we come across. Most of us have only known each other for a couple of years or even months yet to hear the nonsense and banter during and after games, it is as if we have been life long chums. In a new feature for the City Stroller we will attempt to highlight the story of some of our fellow players. This is purely voluntary so if you fancy sharing your tale with the rest of us please let us know (you can leave out all the sordid bondage stuff if you want). First up is a truely incredible yarn of adventure, achievement, horror and happy ending featuring the amazing Bob Glen: Bob had a less than illustrious football career (as a result of being born in the same year as a lot of real players - 1949), but still amassed a decent collection of trophies: 1961-63 (Airdrie Schools Cup), 1962-66 Lanarkshire League winners, 1967 Scottish Schools Cup (10 of the players signed pro, he was the extra man short), 1977 (2nd best player!), 1983 (Managers Cup), 1993 Ship Inn finalist, 1995 (Mark Hurll Cup, with Argyll), 1997 Fair Play Cup, 1997 Presidents Cup, 1997-8 Glasgow Offices Cup (with Scottish Mutual), 2000 Dunedin Cup, 2000 Ancient footballer of the year trophy. An occasional player with Turd Lanark in Glasgow in the 1960s, played with Lothian Thistle, Argyll, Barclay Hearts, pub teams Barnton Hotel and Dalkeith Salters, and all around the world - in Ireland, Germany, Italy, France, Canada and Australia (where he earned $5 per week with Park Rangers).
Played at Broomfield, Cliftonhill, Ibrox (the astroturf outside), Tynecastle (the community training pitch) and Hampden (on the bench). Efter a wee swally, he’ll tell you he also played at Firhill, Wembley, the San Siro, Nou Camp, La Boca and the Maracana. He played with Jim McCluskey, Les Mottram, John Whiteford, Jimmy Walker, Ricky Marlowe, Alan Kay and Bob Kinloch (at snooker). He was only sent off twice in 40 years, one of which was actually quite minor. Other unsuccessful careers include skiing (in 2005 he skied the Rockies from Los Angeles to Vancouver) and golf (in 29 countries in Europe, plus Asia, USA, Canada, Argentina and Australia).
Bob "died" in a horrendous motorbike accident in 2011, but after 3 weeks of intensive care plus 5 more weeks in hospital, he was rebuilt with bolts and screws in 14 operations by NHS Scotland, and his ghost slowly drifted back into walking football in 2016. It is some kind of miracle that he’s still able to enjoy the company of his old friends, even trying to nutmeg them as he plays up to four times a week at Hearts, Oriam and Edinburgh City.
Hibs Community Foundation We have a meeting with Gary Hocknell, who is the Hibernian Community Football Development Manager, on Tuesday 10th October at 12.30pm to discuss a partnership with HCF that could be beneficial to both parties. In our recent survey over 75% of you were in favour of looking at this option so if you have any queries on this or wish to attend the meeting, give us a shout. Hibs already have a walking football session on Tuesdays at East Mains, Tranent from 3.30 to 5.00pm which several of our lads currently attend so hopefully with Hibs wide range of community contacts we can encourage more folks to enjoy the benefits of walking football.
Birthday Boyos😀 Great birthday cheer to three City lads this month - David Kaye who is one day short of a year younger than Peter Craig and the "bairn" of the three, Norrie Gilchrist👏
Fit Fans in Training If any of you fancy getting even fitter or shedding several excess pounds we thoroughly recommend enrolling in the latest FFIT course which is about to start at Easter Road. As someone who lost almost 4 stone a few years ago I can thoroughly recommend this 12 week programme which combines a mixture of dietary and lifestyle advice along with an exercise programme in an excellent venue with a great bunch of folks....and it's FREE. For more details and to enrole go to
Old Pound Coins A subtle reminder that the old round pound coin will no longer be legal tender after 15th October. The banks will then not accept them so no slipping the ones you've forgotten to spend into the ECWF kitty of a Thursday or we'll set Paddy on you.

Another rather brief City WF newsletter again this month as sick boy recovers from his Close Encounter of the Dodgy Ticker Kind. Delighted to have joined in a few kick aboots and hopefully next month will see normal service resumed as Mrs M is currently converting one of her old bras into a sort of shinpad holder to protect my recently inserted kick-start machine from your wild attempts at goal. One can only imagine the torrent of abuse as I model this unique fashion item.
Great to see numbers still averaging around fifteen per week which is pretty good considering we are well into the holiday, bowling and golfing season although there are a few well kent faces who have not been around for a few months - Where art thou ya radges?
A very warm welcome to two new lads who have joined us this month. Firstly John who despite spectating a couple of weeks ago was not put off by the samba-playing hoofball and came back the next week and secondly Alan who after a long career down south has wisely decided to move to Edinburgh and display his Chester-le-Street skills to the City boys. Great to have you both on board boys.
Edinburgh Leisure have now confirmed that our last session at Meadowbank Sports Centre will be on Thursday 30th November so we now have to plan our Brexit from Meadowbank's green and pleasant fields. Being a Trump-free, democratic, equal-opportunities organisation, I felt the best way of taking everyone's views on this and other items would be through the completion of a simple survey which can be accessed through the link here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/TRX9JK8 To assist your tiny wee minds arrive at these momentous decisions I list a little information below: Q1 & 2. Potential new venues
Ainslie Park Leisure Centre, off Ferry Road, - Edinburgh Leisure indoor venue with catering facilities where we should hopefully get the same deal as at Meadowbank. Unfortunately only half the sports hall with wooden floor is available which would allow a maximum 4 or 5 a side.
Jack Kane Sports Centre, Niddrie Mains - Edinburgh Leisure indoor venue situated in the south of Edinburgh with limited catering facilities (vending), Vinyl covered concrete floor (similiar to Meadowbank Hall 2 )
World of Football, Chesser Avenue - 8 six a side and 1 eight/nine a side pitch. All indoors with good catering facilities.
World of Football, Marine Drive, Silverknowes - Brand new venue just opened with 6 six a side indoor pitches and 4 eight/ten a side outdoor pitches, No catering facilities apart from vending machines.
Lochend 3G, Lochend Road (close to Meadowbank) 2 six a side or 1 eight/nine outdoor 3G pitch with access to tea/coffee making and changing facilities.
Spartans Community Academy, off Ferry Road, 1 six a side pitch and 1 full sized 3G pitch similiar to Meadowbank, access to tea/coffee making facilities (could may also be linked with Ainslie Park LC)
If it is narrowed down to a couple of options we could arrange a "trial" session at each venue. Q3. Time of Sessions. Due to the potential increased costs within some of the venues we may have to consider reducing the session to one hour. If so, please indicate your time preference in the survey. Q4. Playing further afield.🚂🚈🚋 Most of the lads who ventured north to Aberdeen in June seemed to have had an enjoyable experience (particularly the previous evenings soiree) so please indicate if you fancy doing this again to possible glamour spots such as Ayr and Stirling, or anywhere else that tickles your collective fancies. Remember most of us can get a bus to anywhere in Caledonia for brussell sprout!! Q5. Changing allegiance. With both ourselves and Edinburgh City leaving our spiritual homes, should we consider aligning ourselves with another group. Edinburgh City, whilst being very pleasant chaps, have not shown a great interest in promoting walking football and I am now aware that Hibernian Community Foundation, whilst attempting to develop WF are struggling a little to get it off the ground. Should we consider creating a link that could potentially be beneficial to both parties? One of the most succesful groups in Scotland are Hearts Walking Football where they enjoy the support of the Hearts Community Development team along with the use of facilities, kit etc. I personally have been involved with this group since it began in August 2015 and can certainly recommend their programme although alternatively we may wish to enjoy our own autonomy with no link to any senior club. Again your collective thoughts are most welcome on this key issue.
Right, now for a little excitement in your lives.........put your cursor on the link below, click it, and Hi Presto....... survey away to your hearts content and don't be shy in the final question. We really need to know all your inner thoughts including any bizzare deviant behaviour required to make your walking football days complete https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/TRX9JK8 Oh.... and last but certainly not least.... Great birthday cheer in September goes to two special guys. Russell Brown, who has done a brilliant job picking the teams, gathering in the bibs, balls etc and extorting the subs over last couple of months, and to Scotland's, and possibly the UK's, most senior player, the one and only Bert Cunningham. You are an inspiration to us all Bert Have a wonderful birthday lads.
Iwould also like to take this opportunity of thanking you all for the support and encouragement over the last couple of months. It is so much appreciated by both myself and Pat.
July'17
Well, well, well lads, Very sorry for the delay in this month's issue as I was unfortunately detained as a guest of our wonderful National Health Service for the last week or two in the Royal Infirmary. Whilst I can thoroughly recommend the superb care package they offer, you may wish to look at other vacation options. As I have missed a few sessions and my head has been mince lately I have not been able to update the Stats although Paddy is probably still heading the leaderboard and we've got around £300 stashed away in an old sock under my bed.
JUNE HIGHLIGHTS 🎭
Aberdeen road trip
Sunshine Samba Soccer
Free facility hire week from our good chums at Meadowbank
JULY BIRTHDAY BOYS 🎂🎁🎉⚽🍻🍷 Great birthday cheer to four of our lads this month namely Billy Brown, Ian Anderson, Dave Agnew and Arthur McIvor.
THE DENIS LAW 👍🍻⚽🚌 Ten City lads headed up to Aberdeen on the 5th June to take part in the Denis Law Walking Football Festival and a splendid time was had by all. Following a fine evening of ribaldry near Union Street, a short nap and a Weatherspoons fry up, the squad hailed a couple of water taxis to sail up the drookit streets to the Aberdeen Sports Village which very fortunately had a watertight roof. The lads played six games and performed not too badly with a smorgasborg of wins, draws and loses although defeats were only by the odd goal. Well done men - next stop Portugal in October?
NATIONAL WALKING FOOTBALL FESTIVAL ⚽🏆 Had a very enjoyable day at the above event guesting for the Oriam teamthrough at the Glasgow Green Football Centre. 32 teams from all over Scotland took part with Midlothian and Gretna making it to the final after beating both Hearts teams in the semi finals. Midlothian, with former Hibs striker Kenny Davidson up front, lifted the trophy following 2-0 win in an entertaining game with full match commentary from the one and only Archie McPherson. Not sure if there was any stramashes in the goal mouth although that may have been Arthur Montford.
ANOTHER DAY OOT 🍻🍻✌🎸🎺 Following a recent report highlighting the benefits of Real Ale consumption on the skill level of walking footballers, some of the chaps are going to the Scottish Real Ale Festival this Friday 7th July. It is being held at the Corn Exchange and admission is £6 or £4 if you are a CAMRA member which includes a free glass & programme. Neil and Russell L. will be propping up the bar & sampling the various beers and ciders from around 6.00 pm and extend a warm welcome to you all. There is food available and entertainment on the night although that maybe a walking football demonstration by Neil and Russ following twelve pints of Jock Tamson's Old Peculiar Super Strength Heavy. Alternatively, get along to the same venue for the Blues Festival on the 29th July to see Deke McGhee's band supporting the Pretty Things and the Steve Nimmo Band....far out man!
FORTHCOMING EVENTS 📆 Wed 19th July: Walking Football Scotland Board meeting at Easter Road Stadium Wed 4th Oct: Vilamoura Tournament, Algarve, Portugal (until 8th)
WALKING FOOTBALL SCOTLAND 🌐 You will no doubt be overawed to learn that your official governing body is now in the process of delivering the following to enhance your playing experience:
Launch of new logo
Develop and launch WFS website where you will be able to find out everything you want to know about walking football but were too scared to ask
Application for charitable status
Securing longer term fundingDevelopment of club affiliation & registration scheme
Code of ConductRecommended standard tournament & festival rules
Support for new and existing club/groupsDevelopment of Walking Football Leader/Officiating course in partnership with SFA
Delighted to answer any queries you may have on this but on the other hand you are probably more interested in the beer fest! You think it's all over? .....it is now!

Hi, Hi, Hi my little wandering athletes. Summer is very much upon us, we have now ventured outdoors and about to embark on our first tour into the real world. Enough of that later, but firstly just a reminder to you all to bring plenty water along to sessions and perhaps a little factor 30 to protect your pointy wee chrome domes.
MAY FACTS & FIGURES 💷 No of Sessions: 4 Active players: 33 (have played within the last 2 months) Average weekly attendance: 14.5
Great away day at Tynecastle with 14 guys playing short sided games alongside 10 Hearts lads.
First open air sessions in the sun at Meadowbank.
Peter finally exposed his wonderfully white legs to the world.
Bob "Zapata" Glen's facial growth.
APPEARANCES Paddy still remains dominate at the top of the leaderboard with an almost impeccable 25 out of 26 appearances followed with Derek now claiming second spot on his own.
Paddy McGovern - 25
Derek McGhee - 24
Les Ferry - 23
Colin Mackay - 21
Bert Cunningham - 19
David Kaye -17
Peter Craig -17
Bob Glen - 15
Russell Brown - 15
Brian Hymer -14
Martin Murphy - 14
Norrie Gilchrist - 14
Special mention to Russell L. who, since his City debut in March, has been an ever present with 9 appearances.
Regular veteran Bert was a rare absentee from last week's session but what a great excuse. He had been invited to the grand opening of his mates new bowling green. Nothing too unusual about that you think, apart from the fact that a) it was in his mate's back garden and b) Bert helped him build it!!! Outstanding work Bert ....I can see a remake of Field of Dreams - "build it and they will come" Maybe when Meadowbank closes, Bert and his mates will make us a new pitch.
JUNE BIRTHDAY BOYS This month sees a plethora of birthdays within our ranks and hearty congratulations go out to Ray, Robert H, Derek, Dave McK, Neill, Niloc plus Michael and his slipper tree.
THE DENIS LAW @ ABERDEEN Ten intrepid City boys (assuming Hearts have not pinched anymore) will be helped aboard the CityLink luxury charabanc armed with concession bus passes, toothbrushes and shinpads to head north to the Granite City on Monday 5th June. Following an evening of revelry in Union Street and a few hours sleep, the terrific ten will make their way to the Aberdeen Sports Village for a days walking football against Scotland's finest. Good luck lads and we eagerly await the tall tales on your return although perhaps what happens in Aberdeen stays in Aberdeen.
NATIONAL WALKING FOOTBALL FESTIVAL -Saturday 24th June As you are aware this event takes place at Glasgow Green on the above date and there may be an interest in pressing our invaluable bus passes into duty again and hurling along the M8 to the dear green place. There are two levels of tournament, the main competitive event and a recreational one which we played in last year so I leave the decision up to you. I will be out the country from the 14th to 21st June so not in a position to arrange 'tings, so if anyone was to take the lead on this.....superbo. For what it is worth, I will be going to the event as a member of the WFS board and would be available for any team (if selected off course). Full contact details on leaflet attached.

Sun 2nd July: Ayr United Soccer Academy @ Ayr
Wed 4th Oct: Vilamoura Tournament, Algarve, Portugal (until 8th)
JUNE 1ST & 8TH JUNE - MEADOWBANK😦 Due to our highly paid national leaders being unable to make a decision in their lives, we are once again expected to go and put an X in a box and give up walking football. This time it is going to take a full two weeks to add up all these wee crosses but do not despair other options have materialised. On the 1st however we can use the outdoor pitches as it is only the indoor sports halls that are unavailable. Discussions are still on going for 8th June.
WALKING FOOTBALL SCOTLAND 🌐 WFS are in the process of setting up a data base of "members" to keep all walking footballers across Scotland up to date and also give you all the opportunity to feedback on how to improve and promote the game. A statistical report will also be compiled detailing numbers playing, age demographics etc which would be used for funding applications and promotional purposes. Groups/clubs have been asked to consider submitting the following details on their members subject to your individual permission - name, date of birth, post code and email address. Apart from improved communication it is also hoped that other benefits will accrue in the future perhaps discounted incontinence pants or cheap zimmer hire. If you do not wish your personal information to be shared please let me know.
FACEBOOK You may or may not be aware that ECWF have a Facebook page. What sort of nonsense is this I hear you luddites cry? It is however, a relatively painless way to keep you updated on the nonsense that surrounds this group and offers you the opperchancity to rip the Micky out of your fellow inmates. If anyone would like any assistant setting up their own account give me a shout.

Following several complaints to the Stroller's news desk that some of you were dozing off or would have been quicker, and probably more entertained, reading War & Peace, my Editor has insisted on a far shorter precis of events this month. So.......... APRIL FACTS & FIGURES 💷📈 No of Sessions: 4 Active players: 31 (have played within the last 2 months) Average weekly attendance: 15.5
Funds brought forward: £237 Weekly fees: £176 £413 Less Hall Hire: £104 Teas & Coffees: £ 40 £144 Funds carried forward: £269 APRIL HIGHLIGHTS 🎭
Two new players joined us last month and a warm welcome to Freddy Milne and former Hearts and Tartan Club legend Jimmy Bremner (no relation to wee Billy)
Apres match free teas & coffees now offered to all paricipants (and the occasional WAG). An hour and a half footie with some of the finest "athletes" you'll ever meet, a cup of tea or coffee and Paddy's biscuits all for the knock down price of three quid - quality man......
APPEARANCES 🎽 Paddy now moves to the top of the leaderboard with an almost immaculate 21 out of 22 appearances followed closely by the deadly Hibby duo, Les and Derek. Paddy McGovern - 21 Derek McGhee - 20 Les Ferry - 20 Bert Cunningham - 17 Colin Mackay - 17 David Kaye -16 Peter Craig -16 Bob Glen - 14 Brian Hymer -14 Martin Murphy - 12 Keep up the good work chaps and let's see a few new faces forcing themselves into the charts next month. APRES GAME TEAS & COFFEES ☕🍵 Glad to see most of you enjoying the delights of the Meadowbank cafe each week and many thanks to the regular biscuit providers who ensure any weight loss during the footie is fully minimised. MAY BIRTHDAY BOYS 🎂🎁🎉⚽🍻🍷 Many happy returns to Robert O'Brien, Jeff Weir (long time no see) and the (almost) ever present Patrick "Paddy" McGovern. COMING OUT 🌞☔🌞 With the balmy summer days almost upon us, it is surely time to try out the wonderful 3G pitch outside at Meadowbank. This will offer the opperchancity of playing 8 or 9 a side or even two games side by side if numbers soar over twenty. The 3G pitch is at the east end of Meadowbank so as you come into reception, turn right along the corridor until you reach the stairs then down to the pitches. From the changing room instead of turning left for Hall 3 go straight on through both sets of swing doors and carry on until a few steps down take you outside. I strongly recommend you bring a wind/waterproof top, plenty water and even sunscreen to protect your follicly challenged wee nappers. (or you can borrow Michael's woolly bunnet.) FORTHCOMING WF EVENTS 📆
Thu 4th: Edinburgh City WF away day at Tynecastle with the Jam Tarts
Sun 7th May: Scottish Borders Tournament @ Gala Fairydean Rovers
Fri 12th May: Over 65 International Exhibition @ Swansea University
Wed 24th May: Nation WF league @ Ravenscraig
Thu 1st & 8th June: General Election - Meadowbank closed again
Sun 11th June: St Johnstone Tournament @ McDiarmid Park, Perth
Sun 18th June: Alloa Festival @ Indodrill Stadium, Alloa
Wed 4th Oct: Vilamoura Tournament, Algarve, Portugal (until 8th)
THURSDAY 4th MAY - The Jambos 💔 and Edinburgh City ❤ As you are aware there will be no walking football at Meadowbank on the 4th May due to the forthcoming election of our wonderful toon cooncillors although I believe the only party to mention walking football in their manifesto is the Monster Raving Looney Party. (Anyone want to borrow my Screaming Lord Sutch albums?) We have previously discussed travelling across the city to take on our Premier League big brothers The Herts of Midlothian and so far the following have confirmed they will be entering the Tynecastle Cauldron: Russell Brown, Derek McGhee, Russell Lee, Neil Sinclair, Ian Anderson, Dennis Allan, Dougie Campbell, Norrie Gilchrist, Billy Brown, Ron Connolly, Paddy McGovern and Colin Mackay although all welcome to come along. To ensure adequate numbers I have issued an open invite to any of the Hearts lads to attend so we may play mixed small sided games. We will be starting a wee bit earlier than normal so can I request all players arrive at 11.30 to allow time to change and help set up the goals and pitch markers ready for a 12.00am start. Access from Gorgie Road is down Wheatfield Street and turn right at end of the road into the back of Tynecastle and follow signs to the changing areas. Car parking is available in the surrounding streets. WALKING FOOTBALL SCOTLAND 🌐 I am sure you will be enthralled to know that an organisation to facilitate, promote and develop walking football across Scotland inventively named Walking Football Scotland, or WFS to its pals, is in the process of being formed. Although the group will have an input into tournament rules, codes of conduct etc their main priority is to promote the health, wellbeing and social benefits of the strolling game by raising awareness, supporting existing groups and helping to create new ones. So no need to worry yer pointy wee heids that big blazered chaps will turn up on Thursdays with whistles and big sticks to beat you firmly on the buttocks for running, passing wind or taking that sixth or seventh blooter in a three touch game. For those suffering from insomnia, notes of the first board meeting held on 4th April are available here: http://walkingfootballedinburgh.weebly.com/news.html ......and that's that!!!!

Welcome to the latest edition of the City Stroller, the petty and ill informed update on the adventures of Edinburgh City Walking Hoofball and in this uncertain age of Fake News, I can assure you that some of the information detailed below is almost correct. MARCH FACTS & FIGURES 💷📈 No of Sessions: 5 Active players: 30 (have played within the last 2 months) Average weekly attendance: 15.8
Four new players joined us last month: Neil Sinclair, Dennis Allan, Dave McKenzie & Russell Lee plus the return of one of our original "Meadowbank 6" - Robert O'Brien. A warm welcome to you all lads, great to have you with us.
Bert's outstanding goalkeeping caused a blow out in his new goalie gloves
Trendy wee walking football poster designed and printed by Edinburgh Leisure
Introduced three touch into part of the session
APPEARANCES 🎽 Since we began keeping a register at the beginning of December 2016 we have played on 18 occasions and the lads with the almost perfect attendance are Les and Paddy with 17 appearances. Very close behind are Derek & David K. on 16 and 15 respectively.Well done boys and listed below are all the double digit performers: Les Ferry - 17 Paddy McGovern - 17 Derek McGhee - 16 David Kaye -15 Colin Mackay -14 Bert Cunningham - 13 Bob Glen - 11 Peter Craig -11 Russell Brown - 10 Martin Murphy - 10 Keep up the good work chaps and let's see a few new faces forcing themselves into the charts next month. DID YOU KNOW?.........🐊🗿 ............. that the average age of our group is currently 66 years young and includes five lads over 70 and three over 80 - amazing!!! In fact if you added all our ages together end to end, it would stretch back almost two millennia to the early 1st Century AD. Not quite when dinasours roamed the Earth but around the time the Roman's did a Donald Trump and built a wall to prevent the Picts, with their trendy wee blue and white faces, coming down and gubbing them at walking football. So remember, be careful with each other out there......would you have booted your grandad up against a wall or shoved yer granny off a bus forty odd years ago?.....I think not!👎 THE POSTER BOYS 👬 Les "Legs" Ferry and David "The Face" Kaye from the Septuagenarian Old Buffties Male Model Agency have been selected as the poster boys for Edinburgh City Walking Football. The fee has yet to be announced but it is believed the lads each paid a considerable bung for this great honour. Many thanks to Edinburgh Leisure for producing this poster and their fine sense of humour in the background design. We have ordered 1000 glossy A5 Leaflets for you all to share with your chums and spread the walking gospel around your local, library, supermarket, doctors etc. In the meantime an electronic copy of this splendid work of art is attached and you are all encouraged to print it off and display on your bedroom walls along with your Freddie & The Dreamers, New Seekers and Petula Clark posters. APRES GAME TEAS & COFFEES ☕🍵 Due to the financial surplus we have built up over the last three months I am delighted to announce that we have negotiated a good deal with the Meadowbank cafe to include a free cup of tea or coffee for all players after the game each week. Hopefully most players will take advantage of this offer to meet up for a chat and perhaps nominate the "Diddy of the Week" award. APRIL BIRTHDAY BOYS 🎂🎁🎉⚽🍻🍷 🍼❌ Very quiet on the birthday front. Obviously all our parents abstained during the months of August. However, Scotland's (and possibly the UK's) most senior walking footballer Bert celebrated his 60th Wedding aniversary. Hearty congratulations to Mr & Mrs Cunningham on a magnificently diamond occasion. EDINBURGH CITY WALKING FOOTBALL DEMONSTRATION ⚽ There is a possibility we may be invited by Edinburgh City to provide the half time "entertainment" during their game against Stirling Albion at Meadowbank on Saturday 29th April. We require at least ten players to take part in a walking football match on the main pitch which is a great opportunity to display your outstanding skills and promote the game to a wider audience. Unfortunately I may not be available for selection but hopefully we can get a great turnout with everyone invited to come along. SOCIAL DAYS/NIGHTS OOT 🍻☕🍴⛳🚌🏂 Is there the remotest interest in any other social activities such as:
a few beers/sherrys/hot chocolates (perhaps at Edinburgh City social club)
golf/bowls outing
a trip further afield for a game or two of walking football
a day on the bus with our free passes
Extreme Line Dancing
Walking Bingo
Caber Tossing
Rock Climbing in Skiis
If so, is there a vibrant, enthusiastic social convener out there somewhere? FORTHCOMING WALKING FOOTBALL EVENTS 📆
Tue 4th Apr: Scottish WF Steering Group meeting, Glasgow
Sun 16th Apr: Stenhousemuir Tournament
Wed 26th Apr: Scottish National WF league starts @ Toryglen on Wednesdays 12.00 to 2.00pmSat
29th Apr: Edinburgh City half time walking football demonstration (tbc)
Sun 7th May: Scottish Borders Tournament @ Gala Fairydean RoversWed
10th May: Scottish WF Network meeting @ The Emirates, GlasgowFri
12th May: Over 65 International Exhibition @ Swansea UniversityWed
4th Oct: Vilamoura Tournament, Algarve, Portugal (until 8th)
There is a strong possibility that an over 60's category will be introduced for some of the above tournaments which may appeal to our more mature fellows. If there is an interest in playing games, either as casual friendlies or in organised events, is anyone interested in taking on the role as team manager? THURSDAY 4th MAY ❌☑ Due to the Local Authority Elections there will be no walking football at Meadowbank on the 4th May. We may however, have the opportunity to play a couple of friendly games against Hearts on their grass outdoor pitches behind the Wheatfield Stand at Tynecastle on this day. If we have sufficient interest we could play two matches with perhaps a more competitive over 50 game and a leisurely over 60/65 stroll aboot against the Jambos. Who's up for it? SCOTTISH WALKING FOOTBALL NETWORK MEETING 🌐 Edinburgh City WF were represented at the above meeting held at Forthbank Stadium in Stirling on 22nd March and the main points of the meeting can be found on the News page of the website. ℹFUTURE OF MEADOWBANK ℹ See below an update on the redevelopment of Meadowbank Sports Centre from Councillor Richard Lewis. “I am delighted to report that at the recent Council budget meeting, councillors approved capital funding of £7.9M towards the construction costs for the new Meadowbank Sports Centre. It is fantastic that this decision has been made as it enables us to proceed with our plans to build a modern, fit for purpose sports centre that meets the needs of the people of Edinburgh. We received a high response to our recent pre-planning consultation from both our key stakeholders and the wider local community. I would like to thank everyone who participated as the feedback has been very valuable . The comments received are now being considered by the project team and they will inform the final design of the centre. I anticipate the existing sports centre will close at some point towards the end of 2017 with the doors opening to the new venue in 2020. We will of course continue to engage with the public, users and stakeholders as the project moves forward and I will let you know when the planning application is submitted” Still a bit vague about the final closing date however it looks like we may be homeless by the end of the year. Fear not my fellow non-runners, there are plenty alternative options out there. Edinburgh Leisure may be able to offer us a facility at either Jack Kane Centre, Gracemount or Ainslie Park Leisure Centres. I have also made initial enquiries at the following facilities that have all intimated availability:
World of Football @ Silverknowes (opening in June with brand new indoor and outdoor 4G pitches)
World of Football @ Slateford (9 indoor 3G pitches)
Lochend outdoor 3G pitch (closest to Meadowbank)
Big decision to make and would be most grateful for everyone's input and any other suggestions to ensure wherever we play is accessable to everyone.

Greetings........and welcome to the second edition of the City Stroller on all things Edinburgh City walking footie. Unfortunately your humble narrator has been posting missing for most of last month's activities, however my spies on the terracing have been keeping me up to date as I roast my buns in foreign shores. FEBRUARY STATS 💷📈 No of Sessions: 4 Affiliated players: 29 Average weekly attendance: 16.25 FINANCE: Funds brought forward: £ 37 SPFL grant: £100 Weekly fees: £189 £326 Less Hall Hire: £104 Goalkeeper gloves x 2: £ 25 Get Well Card: £ 3 £132 Surplus carried forward: £194 FEBRUARY HIGHLIGHTS🎭

Four new players joined us last month. A warm welcome to Billy Brown, Dougie Cameron, Robert Hunter, and Alan Short plus the return of Arthur McIvor, Dave Watson and Tom Steven following his sabbatical Down Under - great to have you all on board lads.
Additional two sets of bibs donated from our chums at Hearts Football Club
Two sets of keepers gloves purchased and another pair kindly donated by Rob Allen
Group now affiliated to ClubSportEdinburgh
MARCH BIRTHDAY BOYS 🎂🎁🎉⚽🍻🍷 Congratulations to the following strollers who celebrate another year on this good earth this month: Norrie Gilchrist, Eddie, Martin Murphy, Rob Allen and Ron Connolly. Have a great day when it comes lads. PROMOTING WALKING FOOTBALL⚽ We have affiliated the group to ClubsportEdinburgh and Your Edinburgh and are now listed on their websites to raise awareness of the walking game across the town. In addition to this we are hopeful that Edinburgh Leisure will assist us in producing posters and flyers to distribute around local libraries, supermarkets, GP surgeries etc - so any assistance in distributing these would be most welcome. FANCY A BREATH OF FRESH AIR? 🌞🌻 You may have noticed the daffies sprouting and the nights getting lighter which obviously means spring is round the corner (well it is over here!). As our numbers increase, the walls of Hall 3 are beginning to bulge a little so what are your thoughts of moving outdoors perhaps sometime in April. We could ask Meadowbank to keep our indoor facility permanently booked so on chilly, blustery and wet days we have an indoor sanctuary however on the occasional bright sunny day, and subject to availability, do you fancy moving outdoors onto the 3G pitch? Advantages include a high quality playing surface, potentially having more than one game running at the same time in numbers got over 20 or playing 8 or 9 a side plus plenty fresh air swirling around our creaky, old lungs. WANT TO GET FITTER AND SHED A FEW POUNDS? 💚 Why not get along to Hibs Fit for Life sessions which are now open to everyone (including non Hibbys) which runs weekly at Easter Road Stadium to help you get fitter, meet new chums and sharpen up for your Thursday walking football. They are geared for all ages and fitness levels, ranging from brisk walks/jogs around the Stadium where the legendary Famous Five, Pat Stanton and Georgie Best weaved their magic; to circuits and fitness under the Stands. Whether your level is just walking or a bit more ambitious, this is the programme for you as the trainers work to your own capabilities. Fit for Life is not about how you look or what you wear, (no lycra luvvies here) but how you feel and exercising weekly and engaging with new people is the best recipe for success. In fact, Les, Derek and Dave Watson are already regulars so you will recognise a friendly wee coupon or two on your first visit. The sessions run every Tuesday from 6pm – 7.30pm and entry is through the main stand with access to the magnificent changing rooms with full showering facilities. And by the way - it's FREE so no excuses! So sign up now by calling Karen on 0131 656 7062 or email [email protected]. TO THREE TOUCH OR NOT TO THREE TOUCH? There is currently a debate raging through the dusty corridors of walking football as to the introduction of a three touch rule into national tournaments and perhaps other events although I emphasis this will not affect individual group sessions who will always retain the option to adopt their own rules. A few of us have played this rule before and I list, in my opinion, the pros and cons. Pros:
Prevents running on the ball
Greatly reduces tackling and the risk of injury (particularly at "competitive" levels)
Ensure game flows better, includes more players within each team and retains possession better
Perhaps easier to coach newcomers to the game the principal of control, touch & pass rather than control, dribble & shoot/pass/lose possession!
With our good neighbours across the border and other countries across Europe adopting the 3 touch rule we may find ourselves out of " 3 touch" with the rest of the walking football world!
Cons:
May increase running off the ball as players attempt to get open quicker to receive a pass
Would initially mean the game stopping on more occasions
Creates more disputes on number of touches
May be a difficult concept for newcomers to the game

Plenty to think about there chaps and would be most grateful on any feedback, particularly with regards to:
Welcome to the first edition of "The City Stroller" which will hopefully be a fairly regular newsletter keeping you informed of what is going on in the dark, satanic world of walking football and in particular, Edinburgh City Walking Football. Following our first month as an independent group we are delighted to welcome several new players as well as our regulars who have been with us over the last thirteen months. Numbers are on the increase and hopefully you are all still enjoying the beautiful game, albeit at a more leisurely pace. Firstly, in the interests of transparency, we issue monthly reports on our playing/financial state of affairs so here goes. JANUARY STATTO CORNER: Number of sessions: 4 Current number of affiliated players: 24 (since 1st December 2016) Average weekly attendance: 12.8 (who is owning up to be the 0.8?) Weekly Fees: £141 Less: Hall Hire: £104 Surplus: £37 FINANCE: The SPFL Trust have assured me our grant of £100 (and bibs) should arrive within the next week or two which would increase our funds to a healthy £137. Possible suggestions are:
Purchase two sets of goalkeepers gloves (£30)
Purchase additional set of bibs (£20)
If a good deal can be made with the cafe, include a free cup of tea or coffee each week for all players
And controversially, subsidise an additional session from 5.00 to 6.00pm on a Monday evening open to existing players and encouraging newcomers who are currently in employment and unable to attend daytime sessions. (I very much doubt there are lets available later than 6.00pm available at Meadowbank)
Welcome your comments on the above and any other ideas although I suggest we do not impliment anything for a month or two until regular numbers have been established although the goalkeeper’s gloves should be a priority to keep our poor senior goalies hands safe from hefty blooters :) JANUARY HIGHLIGHTS:
Edinburgh City Walking Football officially launched as independent group.
Our First aniversary. Our initial session was held on 8th January 2016 run by Edinburgh Leisure.
8 new players joined us. A warm welcome to Ian Anderson, Davie Walkingshaw, Michael Brogan, Ray Forrest, Rob Allan, Peter Doris, Ron Connelly & Norrie Gilchrist.
Succesful kit bundles application to SPFL Trust of balls, bibs & small grant (although still awaiting bibs & grant)
Bert heading towards his 88th summer must surely be the elder statesman of walking football in the UK. (The most senior player in Engerland is a mere slip of a lad at 85.
Paddy coming out of goals and showing the skills that got him signed by Notts County in the '60's.
FESTIVALS, FRIENDLY GAMES & OTHER SOCIAL DAYS OOT: There will be several opportunities to enter teams in various tournaments later in the year and I would like to sound you all out on this. I am aware several of us are also involved with the Hearts, Hibs & Heriot-Watt walking football programs and may wish to tepresent other groups but if there is enough interest amongst ECWF we could consider this. There is a possibility there may be two age groups:
Over 50's for the competitive and sprightly lads
Over 60's festivals for the more gentile and laid back chaps!
Russell, Davie W and Colin played with Hearts in a tournament in the Algarve last October and a most excellent time was had by all. It's on again this year - so if you fancy some walking footie in the sun, get saving your euros now!! Edinburgh Leisure are considering hosting a tournament in late spring/summer for teams in and around Edinburgh and other events already confirmed are:
Gala Fairydean - May 7th
Stenhousemuir - May (tbc)
National Tournament, Glasgow Green - 25th/26th June
Vilamoura, Algarve - 4th to 8th October
Alternatively we could also arrange friendly games with other like minded groups on an adhoc basis. David K. has raised the possibility of an over 65's charity match against his grandson's under 12 team - a most interesting match up where one of us would be older than their entire team added together. I could also arrange a couple of friendlies with Hearts and possibly Hibs. If there is an interest in any of the above, perhaps one of you would consider becoming "Ron Manager" to co-ordinate this and other social activities. THURSDAY SESSIONS IN FEBRUARY: Our booking at Meadowbank has now permanently been amended to run from 12.30 to 14.00 so all players are invited to get down early ready to warm up and play at half-twelve for absolutely no extra cost! CHANGING ROOM: A reminder to the newer lads that the code number for the changing room is 1289. OTHER PLAYING OPPORTUNITIES: Many of us play walking football two or three times a week at other venues. I personally have played at Hibs & Hearts (Tuesdays) and Heriot Watt (Wednesday & Friday) and can thoroughly recommend them all. If you are interested in another session or two, full details can be found on the "Where can I play" page on our website. PHYSICAL CONTACT: On a slightly more sensible note may I remind you all to keep tackling and other physical contact to an absolute minimum. Several of our fine lads are meandering splendidly into their 70's and 80's and others have suffered severe injuries and potentially life threatening illnesses and nobody wishes to pick up any serious injuries at our age. If in doubt, may I suggest you have a wee look at our rules on the website particularly tackling from the side, behind, against walls and in the corners. Many thanks lads for your co-operation in this area - you know it makes sense. FACEBOOK & WEBSITE: A wee reminder for those non-luddites, who are now embracing 21st Century technology, that we are now on Facebook where any pictures, tall tales and up to date news of ECWF will be posted on a sort of regular basis - please feel free to post your own comments etc. (No naughty #*@% words though- your grandkids may be surfing) Our main website has also been updated and if any of you fancy drafting a brief article on the benefits walking football has had on your lifestyle or any other daft stories with a vague connection to WF we will post this on the site to inform other folks as to what they are missing and perhaps encourage them to take up the game.
